Kat Thiede, Botsford Surgery
There has never been another person of whom I've ever come into contact with that has demonstrated as much kindness, compassion, patience and loyalty to others as your husband, father, brother and son has. Dr. Colen has not only been a co-worker of whom I've always respected, but a friend and a mentor in life. Please know that his legacy will continue to live on in all who have come to know him and his "mark in life" will be destined to be remembered always. As his beloved family, I know that his memory will be carried on forever in all of you. God Bless You in this time of sorrow. Kat

The Guerrucci Family
We are still in shock at the loss of Rob. He was a wonderful, warm, caring and loving person who always had a smile on his face and a positive word for his family and friends. You have left us way too early Rob, but your legacy will live forever in all the memories we have of moments shared with you. Our hearts are with Rita, Stephanie and Alex during this difficult time and all of you will be in our prayers. We love you guys....
I did not know Dr. Colen, personally. However, I have had the privilege of attending school with Alex. You can tell by the way Alex treats others and the care and kindness he exhibits that Dr. Colen was a great role model, father and member of the community, and all that he has done for others will live on.
My deepest sympathy is with your family at this time.
I'm keeping Dr. Colen's family in my thoughts every day. I've known his son, Alex for 10 years and my heart breaks for the loss of his hero. I can't say enough how much love and sympathy I want to send your way.
"We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." -Churchill
One of my favorite memories of Rob is when I arrived in Michigan for the first time. I mentioned in passing to Kelley and Stephanie that I wanted to do dinner for my birthday later one evening and Rob and Rita proceeded to have me over at their lake house with a mini-birthday party (cake/candles and all!). I was touched to feel so loved and cared for by the Colen's. But Rob didn't stop there. He went out of his way to check on me, since I was rotating at Botsford for orthopedics at the time, and make sure I had everything that I needed and to answer all my questions.
I have been honored to get to know Rob over the past few years. He is without a doubt the best mentor I've ever had. He always looked out for me when I was traveling alone for conferences and while on audition rotations. He took extra initiative to patiently teach me (even though I got all the "name that song" questions wrong in the OR). Through the years, Rob always treated me like his own family and I always referred to the Colen's as my Michigan family, with Rob being my Michigan father. Rob, you will truly be missed, but never forgotten. You have been an inspiration in my life. To the Colen family, my heart goes out to you guys. I love you all very much and will continue to keep you guys in my thoughts. My sincerest condolences for your loss.
I am truly saddened by Dr Colen's death. Yesterday I learned of the unfortunate and untimely death of Dr Colen and there are no words to describe the utter grief that I am feeling right now, and I cannot possibly imagine the shock and sorrow that has been thrust on his family.
I will always remember fondly the experiences in not only operating room but also out of hospital, playing in various music, teaching ever so energetically and helping patients and students. It is true that he was taken from us too so early. Everybody dies but not everybody lives. Dr Colen lived and still lives in all of us.
Please accept my sincerest condolences and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
Dan, Audrey, Ryan and Lindsey Miller
Dear Rita, Stephanie, Alex and all of your extended family,
Words cannot begin to express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Our hearts are broken along with yours. Rob was just such a wonderful human being who was taken much too soon from this earth, but his spirit will live on forever within each of you.
We are so blessed to have known him and even though we did not get to see him very often, his loss has been felt deeply. We will miss him terribly and he will forever be in our hearts.
May you find peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and how very much we love you.
A man among men. Friendly, talented, confident, impressive. I thank God for letting me meet and work with him. God bless him.
My thoughts go out to you Rita and Stephanie and Alex at this time, I'm so, so sorry.
I have no other words my friend. Love you.

May you rest in internal peace. You were truly a wonderful person, doctor, and friend. Your memory will never die---
Dr Colen was an inspiration to everybody who met him. Kind, gentle, funny, and just so giving. He honestly cared about people, and is the kind of man that everybody should aspire to be like. The air is thick and heavy at Botsford, the loss feels so great. I can't even imagine what the Colen family is going thru. So much love and prayers to your family for this truly tragic loss.
Dear Colen Family,
I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Rob for 8 years as an O.R. Nurse at Botsford. Never in my 15 years as a nurse, have I ever met a nicer, more compassionate, caring and patient man as Rob. His passing is truly a tragedy and he will be greatly missed. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely, Dawne Robertson
Words cannot express our sorrow about the loss of Rob. We have known each other since rob and I were residents and the kids where just teenagers, we can't imagine what you guys are going through. Rob was an incredible doctor but an even better man. He was such a warm caring person with a huge smile on his face every time we saw him. Barrie and I always loved going to hospital events as Rob was always the one she would be the most excited to see as he made you feel like you were part of his family. Our hearts are broken for your family and our thoughts are with you.
To the Colen Family:
May the Lord fill your heart with peace during this very difficult time.
Hearing of the loss of Dr. Colen, was a very sad day for all of us that have had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. My heart and prayers go to his family. He will be remembered always.
Heather Glover RN, Mgr, Cardio-Pulmonary Services
Although I didn't know him personally, I often saw him in passing...always with a smile and friendly hello.
His warmth, kindness, skills, talents, and compassion will be a loss felt by all of us here.
My thoughts and prayers for Dr. Colen's family and loved ones
Dr. Colen was a great teacher and person, with all the interactions I've had with him. He will be missed by all, greatly.
I had the pleasure of working with Dr Colen when I first started at Botsford. He always had a smile and was sure to say hello. Dr Colen was such a pleasure to work with and such an amazing surgeon. No matter what he was always sure to stop and say hello and see how my schooling was going. He would always push to be sure you were giving it your best. I realize how important he was to a lot of people. Dr Colen touched many and I have heard and read so many inspiring stories about him. We were all so blessed to have him be a part of our lives whether it was for just a moment or years.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Dr Colen will be sorely missed.
Roy C. Elrod, MD
Our love and prayers to his family. A profound compassionate and caring physician will be missed by his fellow colleagues, residents, medical students and most of all his patients.
Dr Gilbert Herman
In my 25+ year career as a pathologist, I have met many surgeons .... I consider Rob to be on my short list of the very best of the best. He was technically excellent (did surgery on my wife, I trusted him so much), a wonderful kind person with a true interest in the thoughts of his patients, a happy light hearted person of high intellect.
I have had many breakfasts with him in my 14 year stay at Botsford. I feel like I am in a scene from Le Miserable where the actor laments the loss of his friends after the fight. I will truely miss this remarkable person and doctor.
My prayers go out to the family. This is a very terrible loss to us all.
I want to pass along my heartfelt condolences to entire the family. Dr. Colen was truly an outstanding physician and colleague. He will be dearly missed by all. I will never forget his wonderful smile and the pleasant demeanor he showed day in and day out.
Dr Colen was a beautiful person who always said more than just "Hello", and always with a twinkle and a smile.
He will be missed and fondly remembered.
Dear Mrs. Colen and Family,
I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Colen. He was a wonderful man and skilled surgeon. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met. God Bless you in your time of grief. His smile and kind words will remain in my heart forever. His spirit will live on in the lives he has touched. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Angela Bell CRNA
We will truly miss Dr. Colen, both as a brilliant orthopaedic surgeon, and as a wonderful kind individual.
The world is truly a darker place without Rob in it.....My life has been enhanced because of him,but more importantly I cannot begin to express my graditude for the many acts of generousity not only Rob, but the entire Colen family, bestowed upon my son Kelley! Regardless of the curveballs, I will always consider the Colen family as an extension of my family. Rita, will always be my friend and Rob has left a void in many many lifes when he left this world. He will truly be missed but never forgotten!
Carol & Sandy Vieder
ONe of the kindest people we have ever known. He will be missed beyond belief. Way too early to leave us, perhaps there is a greater need for his humanity and skills elsewhere.
I just wanted to say how sad and shocking it was to hear the passing of Dr. Paul Colen. Dr. Colen did the surgery for my husband several years ago and did a superb job. And what I loved most about Dr. Colen was his COMPASSION, CARE, DEDICATION, AND INTEREST in his patients and people. You knew it came from his heart. The world needs more DOCTORS and people who loved their work and the interest of others. I will miss him very much.
I write this with great sadness. Dr. Colen performed surgery on my leg for a traumatic fall 2 years ago. hes was the most Compassionate, Genuine, and Sincerest Doctor that anyone could want. Although it was a tough recovery, Dr. Colen was with me every step of the way, which made my recovelry so much more bearable. My deepest Sympathy go to Dr. Colens Family and also the the Wonderful Staff in Novi. He certainly made a differance at Botsford and he will be "Greatly" missed.
I first met Rob when he was recruited to provide trauma services at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Over the years,I would frequently see him in the hallway and we always had friendly if brief words with each other - always initiated by his bright smile and "How are you Mike?"
I am so sad to hear of his sudden death. This is indeed a tragic loss for his work family, his patients and future patients who might have benefited from his kindness and skills, as well as his family.
My deepest sorrow & wishes for comfort to his family
Elizabeth Jordan (Lizzy)
I'm so greatful I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Colen for the last 4years at Botsford. He was an amazing doctor/surgeon and friend. It didn't matter how busy he was he'd always go the extra mile for his patients and his co workers. He was the kindest doctor i've ever met. He will truly be missed by many!
It is always sad to hear about a death. I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Colen's death. I always find Revelation 21:3, 4 comforting, if you get a moment please read it.
So sorry to hear of Dr Colen's death. Such a nice man to work with and know. Always a smile and pleasant word for everyone. So respected and well liked at Botsford. he will be missed. My condolences to his family. I will pray for peace for all of you.
Deb Gering RN
I knew Dr Colen in 2 ways- one as an OR nurse where I worked with him at Detroit Receiving. He was a wonderful teacher and great to work with. Secondly, he has been taking care of my son since he was brought to DRH with a devastating work injury in 2010. He was a tremendous patient advocate and made an strong impact on my son and his wife as a very compassionate caregiver. My prayers are with his whole family. I know that this is a horrible loss to you.
He was a wonderful person, and very nice to me.I'm truly sorry for your lose. He will be miss dearly.
Dr. Colen will be surely missed he has helped me so much through my work related accident. I was heart broken when I found out that he had passed cause he was the Doctor who always had a smile and came into your room and the first thing he did was reach for your hand and shake it and ask how are things going! Dr. Colen thank you for being such a great Doctor will miss your great conversations.
Sharon Maleyko-Jacob RN
Dr.Colen has left a warm lasting impression at Detroit Receiving Hospital. No matter how tired he was, he always greeted you with a smile and you felt his caring personality glow. Dr Colen brought a soft warmth to our hospital. It was a honor and priviledge to know such an outstanding compassionate caring surgeon. My heart and prayers go to his family and I want them to know his memories will forever be in the hearts of every person who knew him at Detroit Receiving Hospiital.
Dr. Colen had to be one of the most compassionate doctors that I have ever met. I was fortunate enough to meet him several years ago following a surgery I had at Botsford. When I went on to become an employee of Botsford, he always remembered me, and when he would see me on one of the floors he made sure to say hello, and ask how my day was going, no matter what he had going on, or who was following him that day. When it was determined that my mom needed a hip replacement, there was no other doctor that I would trust to perform it. He took such wonderful and personalized care of us. Dr. Colen will be extremly missed, and will leave a significant whole in my heart, in his patients hearts and that of Botsford. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, this certainly is a tragedy.
Dr. Colen was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was a rare soul that was incredibly intelligent, but humbled. He will be missed by everyone at Detroit Receiving hospital.
Dr. Colen was more than my physician, he was my friend. My heart is sadden and he will be deeply missed.
Though I didnt know you Well, you touched me with you kind smile. Many say We lost a talented, conpassionate man. Its hard that the years werent as ong as people wiswished , but the years that were arare the richest one could have and leave as a tribute to your life and others
Dr colen always had a smile on his face. He made everyone around him smile and made everyone around him better. He always had a hello for you or a wave or a handshake. Rest my friend. You will be missed greatly.
My sincere sympathy to Dr Colen's famiy. He was a remarkable physician and friend... He made me so proud to be part of the Botsford Family as many of his patients would talk so highly of him... he would never walk by without stopping to chat...even if he didnt really have the time..he still did! He was a wonderful person and everyone who has ever met him will feel the loss. My sincere sympathy.
To the Family of Dr. Colen,

Our heart goes out to the Colen family on the loss of such a Great Man. I had the pleasure of working with Rob since he started his career @ Botsford and as the nurses will sometimes say " He's one of the good one's" The world and medicine became a darker place the day he died. God Bless you Dr. Colen. Lisa & Mike Bailey

Dear Mrs Colen and family
I had the pleasure of working with Dr Colen in the operating room at Detroit Receiving Hospital. His presence will be greatly missed and it has been an honor and privilege to work with such a kind and caring Physician. You and in our thoughts and prayers at DRH
To Rita, Stephanie, and Alex,
Your Husband and Dad was very well liked and respected by his fellow physicians. He gave of himself not only to his patients, but to his co-workers, and fellow physicians, students and residents in training.
Always a smile, a twinkle in his eye, and time for everyone. Rob was a courageous surgeon, always willing to take on the tough cases, and extremely competent. A genuine good guy who will be missed in so many ways.
My heart is hurting with the loss of this amazing Doctor. In 2007, Dr. Colen was brought into my life when he saved my life after a traumatic auto accident. Dr. Colen became more than my doctor over the years. I feel like he was part of my family. He was there for my journey to recovery. I will continue to fight and travel that road to walk again. I only hope that when I reach my goal, that amazing man will be smiling his infectious smile and his eyes will be sparkling. He was one of those rare doctors that was a gem. Dr. Colen will always be the flawless diamond in my recovery journey. You are greatly missed and much loved.

May the peace of God which surpasses all understanding rest upon the Colen family & his extended Bostford family at this time. Prayers surround you all for the strength that will carry you through.

I can say I consider myself fortunate to have known Dr. Colen. He was a very kind person all throughout his internship and residency. Dr. Colen was a scholar and gentleman. I was privileged to work with him during my emergency medicine residency at DRH. His reputation for excellence and compassionate care and his dedication to his patients will live on in every physician he helped train.
I'm so saddened by the loss of Dr. Colen. I've only known him a short time, but my time getting to know him will last a lifetime. He made you feel like the most important person in the world when he spoke to you. He was kind, compassionate and humble. And he was a wonderful orthopedic surgeon. His presence made you want to be a better human being. He truly loved people and that is why I will miss him dearly. God bless you Dr. Colen. You are truly loved.

Dear Family of Dr Colen,
We are part of the family of Shannon Medved and wish to extend our heartfelt condolences. We met Dr. Colen on several occasions and found him a warm and personable man. Deepest sympathies to your family.
Navdeep Singh RN ( Navi )
Dear Mrs. Colen, family, and friends.
I had the great pleasure of knowing the great soul that was Dr. Colen. I first started at Detroit Receiving Hospital as a Boarding Clerk in the OR. When he first met me, he told me "This is my pager number, you can page me anytime for anything." I will never forget that. He used to hand me his credit card several times, and tell me to buy pizza for the entire OR. I remember his favorite was Hawaiian Pizza. His great generosity was equally matched by his kind bedside manner with the patients. He genuinely cared for their well-being beyond just the orthopedic aspect. I deem it as an honor to have had the privilege to know him. He was a smart, kind, compassionate, and humble human being. This has been a tragic loss, and may God watch us through this difficult time.
Anthony & Melissa Rakowski
He will be missed by so many, may his legacy continue to remind us how to be exemplary professionals and compassionate individuals. Our prayers are with the Colen family.
Lisa Sutton RN
I have worked with Dr. Colen when he was a resident and as an attending in the ER. Dr. Colen was always quick to smile and never missed an opportunity to explain a procedure. Whenever Dr. Colen came to the ER, he had remarkable recall of names even when you did not see him for long periods or time. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing today, he will be sorely missed and my prayers are with his family.
I am truly blessed to have known and worked with with Dr. Colen at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He was an amazing surgeon, friend , and colleague to all of us. We were lucky to have him as part of our DRH family. My deepest sympathy go out to his family. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

He was an exceptional surgeon, with wonderful bedside manner, kind to both his patients and his colleagues. He was a wonderful teacher, he was patient and took the time to instruct his residents. Dr. Colen was a pleasure to work with, everyone enjoyed being around him. He was always happy, always smiling, he had a great sense of humor and could make everyone laugh. He was so kind, and humble, while at the same time being one of the best in his field. He has touched so many lives throughout the years. People all throughout the DRH OR have stories of his thoughtfulness, generosity, and compassion. Dr. Colen will be greatly missed.
Jennifer Gherasim, CRNA
As a medical student I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Colen two years ago. It was the best clinical experience I ever had. He was an amazing teacher, amazing physician, and a great person. I looked up to him and know I will be a better physician for having met him. He showed me what kind of physician I want to be. He was truly, and still is, an inspiration. My heart goes out to his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. His death is tragic and a great loss.
Gassan & Angela Alaouie
Dr. Colen was a compassionate and loving man. He was an outstanding mentor and this is truly a tragedy for everyone who was blessed with the privilege of working with him. He had the ability to make one smile, and his wonderful personality brought comfort and peace to every life he touched. Dr. Colen was a very exceptional surgeon with a bedside manner that exemplifies the doctor-patient relationship. Our hearts and prayers go to all of his family. Dr. Colen, thank you for all you have taught us both in and out of the OR and for inspiring us to become better human beings! Until we meet again. With love!
There is so much to say about what a great person Dr. Colen is. For me personally, he took away my pain... A precious and often under appreciated gift. He is true healer and from what his coworkers indicate (my wife included) a humble, caring and giving individual.
Still not even sure what to say. I am absolutely in shock at the loss of not only my father-in-law, but my mentor and one of my best friends, so I'll keep this short... we will all miss you in ways that I don't think we even realize yet. Thank you for everything you've given your family, my family and everyone around you. I hope to someday be able to give back what you've given me.
i just want to thank him so much for giving me more time with my mother.
We have lost a great surgeon, friend, coworker, and teacher.
He will be missed by all the staff at DRH OR. We loved Dr. Colen dearly. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy and prayers.
Dear Colen Family,
Thank you all for sharing your love one with us. Dr Colen was an awesome teacher and I thank him for his patience, generosity and his always kind words of encouragement. Dear Lord thank you for sharing a true Angel.
Dr. Colen was one of the most amazing surgeons I have come across. Not only was he an exceptional surgeon, but he was also an amazing mentor & person that I am so blessed to have had in my life. I am so sorry for your loss, Colen family. Know that he is in a much better place. Until we meet again!
Still a shock to me, for He was one of the greatest Doc. He will always be remembered for his smiles and life he touched. He was a great mentor, teacher and a friend. May his soul rest in peace.
Dr. Randy Bernstein
I am truly shocked and saddened by the loss of Dr. Robert Colen. He was a remarkable surgeon, an outstanding physician, and a friend. Even though I would often see him in and around the operation rooms, I didn't really get to know him until I got injuried in a motorcycle accident. Even though I knew I had to go to surgery because of a pelvic fracture, I was happy to see Robert walk into my room in the Botsford ER to tell me he was taking me up to the OR.
Over the last 9 years, whenever we saw each other, we would always say hello and talk for a while. After I got a new bike, he always got a kick out of telling me that motorcycles were dangerous. I would then comment back that I would just have to have him put me back together...... Dr. Robert Colen was a fine man and he will be deeply missed!
Dr.Colen was a sweetheart. My full knee replacement was frighting for me, and he calmed my fears. He was always there with a smile, we would always talk about the latest concert he had been to. He was everything and more, they say God only takes the best and I'm sure wherever Dr. Colen is he's smiling and ready to lend a helpiing hand. Many Prayers go out to his family and all who had the pleasure of knowing such a wonderful man.
I write this with a heavy heart. My sincere condolences to Dr Colen's friends and family. I have known Dr Colen since his internship here at BH and I can say that he was probably the nicest person I have met here in my 33 years. He always made you feel like you were his bestfriend. I will miss him forever. RIP Dr Colen
The Schoenborn Family
We were so saddened to hear the news of Dr. Colen. He was an amazing doctor and man! My husband worked with him during his residency and My son (then 6 years old) saw him because of a nasty broken wrist last summer. Dr. Colen was so good with him! He ran into his office and grabbed him a stuffed puppet animal (which he still sleeps with today)! I was so impressed with how compassionate and thoughtful Dr. Colen was!
Dr. Colen is by far one of the best doctors we have come in contact with. We send our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Memories will keep him alive in our hearts and minds forever.
Maria & Jason Biederman
Rita & Family-
As I'm sure were you, we were so shocked & saddened to hear about Rob on Monday from my father-in-law. Jason & I have known Rob since we were medical students. I also had the fortune (or maybe misfortune - since usually his patients are orthopedic nightmares) of him taking care of my Dad after he fell off a ladder and sustained an open fracture. My Dad's injury with complications of infection went on for a year and a half. Rob was always available to our family when my Dad had another infection. My parents loved him & thought he was such a wonderful, caring person.
When I was on staff at Grace, it was always such a pleasure to bump into him and catch up.
He will be greatly missed and please know that you have many people - colleagues & former patients- supporting you through this difficult time.
Rest in peace Rob.
Rashanda Brown, D.O.
I am sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we hope that your family will get a peace that surpasses all understanding in the days to come.
With deepest sympathy,
Anthony and Rashanda Brown
Dr. Colen was one of my most favorite physicians to work with. He was the most generous person, the best teacher, a real family man and all around wonderful human being. I am honored to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time, peace be with you.
Kathleen and Shaun Brossy
Dr. Colen is truly one of the greatest people we have ever known, his kindness and generosity are beyond compare, we feel fortunate to have had him in our lives. He always had a way of making everyone feel welcome and important, as he took a genuine interest in getting to know people. If everyone could be a little more like Rob, this world would be a better place.
I have known Rob since he first came to Botsford. He is one of the most friendly guys I know and one of the smartest and greatest Doctor I've ever met. He always said hi, asked how things were going. He took the time to ask about my family, and he smiled when talking about his.
I am truly heartbroken over losing one of the "best Doc's we have". He is one of a kind, so exuberent with life
and he leaves us with many, many fond memories.
There doesn't seem to be any reason why God would take him now, with so much to give, but like many things, you just have to believe it is part of a greater plan.
We'll miss him deeply and our prayers are with you.
Dr. Colen was a great guy. He was always so joyful and friendly. I am saddened by his unexpected death. My prayers are with his family.

To the Colen family
Dr. Colen was truly one of the "special" people that God puts here on earth. He always had a ready smile and a word or two when you passed him, (usually at high speed) in the hallways at Botsford.
I had my own personal experience with him as a physician when he
repaired my mother's hip fracure in June of this year.
He came very highly recommended by my husband's physician, whose opinion I value.
Dr. Colen took the time in OR to speak with me before my mother arrived in pre-op. I felt more comfortable with the impemding surgery knowing she was in very capable hands.
As a physician he was totally approachable, kind and attentive to his patients and their families, and gave
the very best of himself and his talent.
My mother's surgery and rehab went very well and when she
had her follow up visit with him at his office, Dr. Colen told her "Get out of here, I don't need to see you anymore." He, my mother and husband had a good laugh over that.
I only wish she still needed to see him and he was here to see her.
There is a great void here in the Botsford family and I can only imagine how much greater it is for you, his loved ones.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and I can only hope that in time, going back and reading these testaments to
Dr. Colen's generosity of self and kindness to all will help ease your pain.
God Bless you.
Dr Colen was a great man, always taking the time to say hello and acknowledge everyone in the room. He always made me feel like I was the only person in room even if the room was completely crowded. I will miss Dr Colen for his kindness, generosity, and overall having a BIG heart...I will never forget him.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal...
Detroit Receiving Hospital
Approximately 17 years ago I came to Botsford ER to give birth to my second daughter. There happened to be a bright-eyed bushy tailed young intern there to take my history, he made me feel cared for and important and took the time to listen to me and answer any and all questions that I had. That intern was Dr. Colen. Ill never forget that! Thank you Dr. Colen and God bless his family in their time of sorrow-he will be missed!!!!!
My prayers go out to the family of Dr Colen for the loss of a special man and an outstanding Orthopedic surgeon. I had the pleasure of knowing Dr colen through his residency and time at Tri County. He will be greatly missed by so many people. Barb
To Dr. Colen's family and friends,
What can one say at a time like this that will make any sense of the overwhelming feeling of loss?
Dr. Colen was one of a kind!
He lived life to the fullest!
He was truly a great man, surgeon, teacher, friend. He was a pleasure to work with at Botsford. He always had a smile on his face. He was so easy going and funny. He was giving and kind. He went out of his way to help others. He was loved by many.
Please know others share in your loss.
He will truly be missed.
His Journey's Just Begun
By Ellen Brenneman
Don't think of him as gone away--
his journey's just begun
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost--
and he was loved so much.
Although I was never fortunate enough to have met or worked with Dr. Colen, I feel that I have gotten to know him throughout the past couple of years through his son, Alex. Alex and I are classmates at MSUCOM, and I sincerely regard him as a good friend. I consider Alex a very unique person who always has a smile on his face, a good story to tell, and a willingness to go out of his way to help others. From reading the previous posts, it is clear that the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree." I am saddened that I will never have the opportunity to have Dr. Colen as a mentor, but his legacy is something to aspire to. I can only hope that when I pass away, my patients, co-workers, family, and friends will be able to say the same kind words about me. Thank you, Dr. Colen, for raising such a wonderful son and for being an inspiration to future physicians, such as myself. My deepest condolences to his family and all affected by his untimely death.
Jen & Chris Galatis
Chris and I have the pleasure of knowing the Colen's, as we are extended members of the Brossy family. Rob was truely one of the nicest people we have ever met. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rita, Stephanie, Kelley and Alex.
To The Colen Family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult time. I was a patient of Dr. Colenís and he fixed me when I was broken. I also had the pleasure to work with him at Botsford Hospital. He was the best Orthopedic Doctor ever, he always was so up beat and never made you feel that he was above you. He truly will be missed.
Charles Garramone, D.O.
Rob, I will always remember you as a kind man who was always willing to take the time to teach and lead. You were a beacon of hope in the murky sea of medicine and will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Dr. Colen's family, friends and colleagues. What a tremendous loss for our Botsford family and personally as he took such great care of my daughter as his patient. He was truly one of a kind...irreplaceable.
I first met Rob when we were medical students together at Botsford. We became fast friends, and have remained so as our careers paralelled each other. He was a fabulous colleague. He is a man who set an example of how to live your life: love of life & family, treat people with respect, work hard, always wear a smile, play hard & make time to do the things you enjoy. He has touched many lives because of this. He will be missed because of the person he was. I am grateful that I had a chance to know him, and strive to live by the principles that made him a great person. Prayers go out to Rita, Stephanie, Alex and his extended family. I hope that you will find comfort in the love he had for you and the fabulous memories you have.

Although I have not worked at Botsford for a few years I still and will always remember you. Not only did you have excellent skills as a doctor you also were kind and understanding...not only to your patients but to all staff members. You were truly a gem.
My deepest sympathies go out to the Colen family. I know he will be greatly missed! I know this has truly devastated Shannon as he had done so much for her! May you find comfort during these tragic times. God Bless!
Words can not describe how fortunate I feel that I had the pleasure to work with this great man. He was compassionate, generous and treated everyone with the utmost respect. He was a wonderful family man, immediate and extended, and will be greatly missed by everyone. Rita, Alex and Stephanie you are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

My heart aches with sorrow at the loss of such a wonderful man. He was a friend, my doctor that helped me through a very rough time with my ankle and client. I pray now for Rita and the family and express my deepest sympathy to all.
Sarah and Brian Prybylski
Dr. Colen always greeted my family and I with a hug. He opened his home to us and showed genuine interest in our lives. If I had to describe Dr. Colen in one word, the first word that comes to mind, is 'generous'. I am grateful to have gotten to know him and feel priveleged that the Colen's have become extended family. Rob will be sorely missed.
To the Colen family -
As a Circulating Nurse at Botsford Hospital I on occasion have been assigned to Dr. Colen's O.R. I have never seen him to be other than kind and patient to those he has worked with. He was always willing to teach others and did so with humor and respect. He was a gifted and innovative surgeon and we as O.R. staff were always very happy to work with him. He will truly be missed.
Paula Abraham, RN, BSN, CCM
Three weeks ago while at Dr. Colen's office with a client, I talked to him about my brother who had fallen and fractured a hip and wrist. He offered support and kindness as he always did, not just to my clients but to me. Of course the world has lost a great surgeon but more importantly, a very, truly good man. Heaven is lucky to have him!
Life seems so unfair at times like this. Reading all the messages and seeing how many lives Dr. Colen touched is such a tribute to his life and legacy. My thoughts and prayers are with Dr, Colen's family during this tragic and painful time. What a lesson for all of us to seize the moment, live life to the fullest and always be kind to others.
I knew and worked with Dr. Colen for only a short time (2 years) as a new RN on 4 south at Botsoford. I have thought about him often in my years of orthopedic nursing for his knowledge, kindness, and excellent care of his patients. He always took the time to answer my questions in detail and educate me. I had always hoped to see him again one day to tell him the impact he made on me and others.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire Colen family. May God Bless and watch over you during your time of sorrow. Dr.Colen was a wonderful man that always had a smile on his face. Whenever we passed each other in the halls at Botsford he would always say hello. He will be truly missed by everyone that knew and loved him. Rest in peace Dr. Colen.
My thoughts of Dr.Colen are of his talent and generosity and his ability to connect to you as a person. He changed my life, I had a hunting accident and was told buy different doctors my leg was unsaveable. Dr. Colen seen things different and because of his talent and kindness I am up and walking with my own leg. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and staff and friends, he touched and changed my life in ways many others couldnít. My prayers go out to his family staff and friends, he is a one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Who knows why the lily has so brief a time to bloom, before it folds it petals in to bid the world good night and rests it's head in a gentler place. God Bless you Dr Colen and prayers for your family. Your ready smile and kindness will be very missed.
I am very saddened to hear of Dr. Colen's passing. He was a fine man and a great doctor. Thanks to a referral from a customer, I met Dr. Colen a few years ago. And rather than surgery on my knee, he prescribed a change in my diet and a half dose of cortizone injection. My bowling game has never been better. He will be missed.
Words cannot express my sadness over the loss of Dr. Colen. I have always been impressed by his kindness compassion, skills and AMAZING bedside manner which I got to witness personally when my daughter (11 yrs. old) recently became a patient of his (fractured ankle) She fell in love with him instantly on her first appointment with him. She was hoping for a pink cast - however- the one placed in the ER did not require replacement until the subsequent visit and when Dr. Colen saw the pouty look on my daughters face, he asked her "well, what color would you want when we change it?" she answered "pink" he politely excused himself from the exam room and returned with a roll of pink fiberglass casting material and applied it over her existing cast.....she was grinning from ear to ear....he also gave her a hand puppet which she named "Spike" and upon telling my daughter the heart breaking news...she insisted on holding Spike all night and we both cried ourselves to sleep....
Dr. Colen will be deeply missed and I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers and the memories of a remarkable person/physician in my heart forever...
Susanne Grazal, RN
I just want to say thank you to Dr. Colen and thank you to his family for sharing this brigt light with the world. I enjoyed working with him every tuesday in the OR at Receiving. I looked foward to the challanges of his casrs. He made the day enjoyable. Sometimes the casrs were difficult but he made them interesting. I will miss his energy and smile, but I will never forget him. Thank you Dr, Colen.
Please accept our prayers for this kind and giving Dr. who has helped my family and I over the years. He will be missed.

Although I work at Botsford, I didn't actually meet Rob until he moved in next door to us. I've rarely met a surgeon so acutely aware of the challenges his patients faced in their daily lives, thus making recovery decisions based on each patient's unique personal situation. Rob was wonderful to interact with both professionally and personally. As hard as he worked -- and he worked REALLY hard -- he never lost his capacity to have fun. Nothing made him happier than gathering up his family and going off on a fun getaway. He lived his life with enthusiasm, humility, love,
courage and strength. We will never forget him.
The unexpected death of Rob Colen is as indescribable as it is unbelievable. There are no words that can truly reflect the joy he brought to all who met him. When in doubt, I look to Gibranís The Prophet, where he writes ďIf you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of lifeĒ. And Robís life was indeed full of love, skill, compassion, family and fun. He lived such a big life but was able to make everyone in it feel as though they were his sole focus. That was his gift to those of us happy to know him and sad to lose him.
How sad to lose such a bright light at Botsford. No matter how busy he was, he always greeted you as if he had been looking for you. Just imagine how many lives he has personally touched, and now through all of us, how many more. We can only aspire to have a live as well lived as Dr. Colen. We were lucky to have known him.
It is with great sadness that I am signing this for Dr. Robert Colen, D.O. Dr. Colen will truly be missed. I have to say when I heard the news I was stunned beyond belief and speechless. I had the honor of not only working with Dr. Colen but also being his Patient. He was truly a very kind man. You could stop him to ask him a question and he would take his time with you. His talent, expertise and knowledge to the Medical world will surely be a great loss. He was always there for his patients as well as staff. My heart is so heavy for this great loss and for his family. You can truly be proud of how he touched so many people. He was loved by so many. My prayers are with you at this difficult and trying time.

Whether †a colleague, patient, family or friend, we were blessed. †Rob was and is a treasure. †In a career cut short, his boundless energy, spirit, skill and compassion was unrivaled. †As time passes, we will eventually accept, but will never forget. †His legacy to the profession and to everyone he touched is the treasure we will forever cherish and hold in our hearts and minds.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you and yours.
With sympathies, Wiley and Hope Fan and family

My husband & I have been Dr. Colenís patients for several years and he was the most compassionate, humble, and respected physician anyone could ask for. He always had a smile and took the time needed for his patients and got to know each one individually. If he could not further assist you with pain you were still having he assured you he will find someone who will and followed up with whoever he referred you to. It was quite a shock to learn of his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, staff, colleagues, and the many friends he has made in his lifetime. He will be missed tremendously but will live on in our hearts and memories. Dr. Colen told us on one of our last appointments we had with him that my husband & I are good people but he was the best and the brightest and his shoes will be hard to fill. May you Rest in Peace Dr. Colen and thank you for all your help and general concern that you provided to us.
My heart is heavy for your loss. I worked with Rob on the Rehab unit at Botsford for several years and have always found him to be the nicest person and such a skilled physician. My last conversation with him was about our kids. He is so proud of Alex and Kelley. His smile and friendliness will be sorely missed.

Rob will be deeply missed, he was a great colleague and a treasured friend. My prayers are with his family and friends.
My deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Dr. Colen. He was a wonderful doctor and man and will be greatly missed.
DR. Colen you always had a smile on your face. Every time I saw you I would say here come shorter then me. I would also ask you how did you do your surgery standing on a stool and we would just laugh. Love Angela Batiste We work together UHC 6A ORTH.
My heart and prayers go out to you Rita, and the children. I have know you since you were 2yrs. old and have followed your journey through you sister, Janet. I have celebrated your milestones of you and Rob together through the years. What a blessing you both have been . May God's Peace be yours.
To the Colen family I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your father. My heart is sadly deepened by the loss of a great man. I had the privledge of meeting him at the worst point of my life and he helped give me my life back. I will forever hold a true debt of gratitude to him for allowing me to return to my loves. The medical profession, Botsford, and DMC have truly lost a great man. My prayers shall be with you always.

Dr. Colen you will be truly missed and never forgotten. I am honored to have not only been your patient but to have worked with you! Heaven has received a true angel! Our deepest sympathies go out to the Colen family.

His personality was like no other.
Self composed, Tranquil, & Serene. How ironic for a trauma specialist. During bustling times at TCO he would lighten my day by shaking the back of my chair, pointing his finger at me reminding me to smile. It was you Dr. Colen that made life look so simple , your forever in my heart.

I'm writing this through the tears I shed for the most spectacular man I ever met. Over 21 years of knowing this great surgeon. I've had the honor of working with Dr. Colen in his office for 6 years. Watching him with all his patients is a very wonderful experience. I will truly miss him and to Rita, Stephanie and Alex, and Sophie, no that your father loved you so much. He may be gone know but he will never be forgotten. I love all of you.
I am saddened to learn of the loss of Dr. Colen. He was my late mothers favorite Doctor. I beleive she made up reasons to go to him just because he was so warm and caring. He performed surgery on my Mom's arm that was broken and operated on in Mexico, using a titaniam rod and bone from her hip. His work was magical, he had a wonderful way with people. My prayers are with his family and coworkers and patients.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Colen. He always had a big smile on his face as he walked on to the Rehab Unit at Botsford. He was very kind to his patients as well as the staff. He will truly be missed. My prayers go out to his family.

To the Colen Family,
I am so sorry for this loss....My favorite memory is when I worked on a Holiday that I didn't particularly care to be there and low and behold, Dr. Colen whipped out some money and told us to get ourselves some lunch. This brightened mine and other team members moods immediately...I never forgot that day. His act of kindness stood out in my mind.
My prayers and thoughts are with the Colen Family.
Karen Dittrick, RN
I was the rapid response nurse on duty last Sunday. By the time I saw Dr. Colen he was already in the cath lab and CPR was being performed. We are always told that Botsford is a "family". I had never felt it so strongly than I did that sad day. July 15th was my worst day at work ever. It was very difficult to work on him but we did, we had to, and it was our finest moment. Somehow we held back the tears and performed like a machine. Everyone who was there performed seamlessly- at their peak. We were working to save our family member! We all considered him a brother...a father...a cherished friend. I want everyone to know that despite all that was going on I held his hand. I talked to him. I let him know we wanted him to come back, that he shouldn't go, that he would be missed. I'm sure he heard me, but it was obvious that this wasn't a decision we or himself was going to make. After it was over when I turned away from him and saw the faces of all who were there I saw sadness and disbelief. The tears fell and hugs were given. We held on to each other and had a good cry. Our Dr. Colen was gone. The hallway was lined with doctors and family. The hospital was filled with a heaviness, all were in shock not knowing what to do, all wanting to know why....We all cried...Whatever he was sent to us to do- he must have done. He has influenced so many people. Someone told me he died of having too big of a heart..His passing has made me re-think how I feel about my Botsford family. I am honored that I knew him and he knew me. "Hi Karen! How are you today?" "Great Dr. Colen- it's nice to see you." At graduation I joked with him about parking next to his blue Ferrari and not to worry about the scratches...he just laughed and said "Karen I trust you- you want to drive it?"..I've known him for 18 years at Botsford. Even though he will be sadly missed, he will forever be cherished in our hearts.

Robert will be missed, both as a friend and a great physician.
I am so sorry to learn of Rob's sudden unexpected passing. I had never met Rob, but I *always* heard Jeannie Lieb, his sister, speak very highly of him. My deepest sympathies to all his loved ones during this extremely difficult time.
Thank you God for such a wonderful blessing you have given us! Dr. Colen--you had purpose in this world from the BEGINNING. You succeeded and conquered. God Bless the family.
He reminds us that the art of our science is the way we treat people-ourselves and our colleagues. We all lost a great example of a true "gentle"man.
Dear Colen Family,
I'm so very sorry for your loss....I'm at a loss for words right now it's just a shock.Dr.Colen saved our son from losing his leg almost 2 yrs ago...This man will never be forgotten in my life time.He was the kindiest and understanding Doctor i have ever met..Will be praying for all of the Colen Family..
My deepest sympathy for your loss. He was an exceptional physician/surgeon and human being. My wife and I have personally experienced his professional skills. He can never be replaced, of course, and will always be remembered. I firmly believe he's in a better place now. God bless all of you.
Deepest condolences to the family of a great, caring and compassionate doctor. He was also a kind human being. He will be missed by his patients. May God grant you peace.
To the Family of Robert Colen,
I wish to express my deepest sympathy in this time of sorrow. Dr. Cohen was a friend to all and a great loss to us all. May the Lord be with you in this time of sorrow.
I worked with Dr. Colen in the Surgical Services Department for 9 years at Botsford Hospital. He was an extraordinary physician, co-worker, and friend. He was a man of warmth, loving, caring person to his patients and co-workers. He has encouraged me to be all that I can be at work and he was an awesome doctor! He will be greatly missed! I will be praying for you, family of Dr. Colen, that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Dear Colen Family,
We had the pleasure of Dr. Colen being my moms dr for emergency repair of her leg not once but twice last summer. He was so very kind to not only my mom but to our whole family taking time to answer all our questions. Especially after a very long day of surgeries he still was very patient with us and bringing humor to us. Dr. Colen left a huge impact on a lot of peoples lives and that you should be so very proud of. He lead a very good journey while here on earth helping so many. May he rest in peace and continue to make others happy in his new home.

There aren't enough words to express my sorrow... Dr. Colen was a very important person to me. As a nurse in Botsford's Critical Care, it was always a pleasure to see him when he was checking on a patient. He always made time to say hello and share some conversation. And as one of his current patients, he gave me hope. I had the utmost respect and appreciation for his amazing skill and talent as a surgeon. He was also an exceptional human being. Definitely one of the kindest and most caring people I've ever met in my entire life. This world is a better place because of him...
Mrs. Colen and family, my heart aches for you... I will keep you in my prayers.
God called an angel home... He will never be forgotten.
There are no words to express the hurt and sadness felt by the loss of our beloved surgeon and friend, Dr Colen. I was blessed enough to meet him almost 10 years ago in the Botsford OR. We worked side by side many evenings over the years and he not only taught me a lot but he truely became someone I would call a friend. His kindness was always present, even when things were not going well. I will miss him tremendously and I'm devasted by his sudden death, just as we all are.
I will pray for you always Dr. Colen, and hope that your memory will linger on and on...

Dr Colen will so sorely missed by the Osteopathic Orthopedic community of colleagues and students. High energy and enthusiasm for helping people was his calling card. A great loss to patients, colleagues, students and especially his family.
Susan Phillips RT (R)
When I first learned of Dr. Colen's passing I couldn't believe it...and it's still hard to believe.
Dr. Colen was my hands down favorite orthopedic surgeon at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He was always delighted to see me, would greet me by name (a rarity in itself) and truly made me feel like I was the most important person in the world to him. Reading the comments here I realize (well, I guess I always did) that he loved everyone that much.
As much as I'll miss him, I'm sure his family will of course miss him much more. He was much too you and had so much more to give. My heart goes out to his loved ones at this time, and pray that you will be comforted in your grief.
He leaves a huge empty place in the DRH OR. I will miss him terribly.

To Dr. Colen's Family and Staff,
It is rare in our industry to meet a physician that was a true gentleman and a pleasure to work with. His staff is a reflection of his ethics and compassion. He will be truly missed by all that had the pleasure of meeting him. God bless !
Dr. Colen's family:
I was a DMC resident who worked with Dr. Colen for 4 years. During that time, I learned so much from him. In his kind, humble way, he taught me how to care about people and care about patients, rare qualities in orthopedic surgery. He respected me, encouraged me and treated me like a person. Without knowing it, Dr. Colen positively impacted my life and as I try to emulate the generosity he showed to everyone he encourntered, his influence will continue to impact lives for years to come.
My sympathies for you loss. I am praying for your family daily.
I have known Rob for almost 20 years. Never in my life have I met such a caring and skilled physician. He is the epitome of what a physician and a friend should be. I watched his kids grow and saw how proud he was when his daughter got married, his son got accepted to medical school and most recently when Alex began his 3rd year at Botsford. I was fortunate to attend a few of his Vegas trips and my kids got to know him when we went to the Pistons games together.
Rita, you were truly blessed having Rob as your husband just as he was truly blessed in having you as his wife. Words can't describe my feelings toward this devastating loss. I was honored to know him as a friend and colleague. He will be missed, but his presence at Botsford and in our hearts will live on.

Rob will be sorely missed. My fondest memories include seeing Rob at heavy metal concerts at DTE Music Energy Theatre! You will be forever remembered my friend! Thanks for meeting and evaluating my mother when she needed a complicated hip revision. My mom spoke very highly of Dr. Colen. Rob was the kind of person all of us could learn something from. I will miss my heavy metal rock buddy!! Hope to run into you again center stage in heaven! Rock on brother!!!
Dr. Colen was a mentor, co-worker, and a dear friend of mine. He taught me so much about life and how to really live, loving your profession and patients, and most importantly how to treat others. He never had an ill word to say or simply a bad day. He couldn't pass a soul without smilling, saying hello, or asking how their day was. He made us better individually, and I feel so blessed to have known him. He was a rock for myself and all of us at Detroit Receiving Hospital and will be greatly missed, but his legacy and lessons will live on in each of us.
I've worked at Botsford for 6 years. I never got to meet Dr. Colen personally. I was fortunate enough tho to receive his gift of Hello's with the brightest smiles, Good Mornings It's great to see you today's. I'll miss that! I spent time reading the guestbook today. I cried some tears as my brother left this world in the same way at the age of 42. To the family, I feel your loss deeply and will hold you in my prayers forever. To all of you who tried to save him in this world, God Bless You for what you do...My arms are surrounding everyone during this difficult time....
A sympathy card has been sent to a friend or relative of Robert Paul Colen, D.O. .
The instant we met was a happy moment. We are kindred spirits and have shared similar stories and paths.I will celebrate the times we shared together, filled with love and laughter. His path is one of love, faith, and peace. I will carry on his message of such for we share the same spirit. Michael
The Colen Family: Rob was a great man. He recently performed a meniscus repair on my knee. At my post-op visit he wanted me to have my surgical photos and said, "you never know..tomorrow something could occur with me and I want you to have these for the next surgeon." An RN, I thought this was a little strange, as he was a picture of health. Buth the more I thought about it, he's being realistic. Each time I think of him not being here, I think of his statement.
In the past, my desk at Botsford overlooked the physician parking lot. I used to kid him about his car collection and what a magnet it was for male physicians and residents. People frequently took photos of themselves next to his cars! He would grin from ear to ear.
My prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
My sincere sympathy to the Colen family. I am so sorry for your great loss. As you are filled with loss and grief, I pray that you will draw strength from our loving God who promises us that soon God will resurrect our loved ones back to life in paradise. (John 5:28,29) May God prove to be your true source for comfort and hope during this most difficult time.

I am at a loss for words. I have done Dr. Colen's billing since he was a resident. My family and his have become friends. Our lives were blessed by just knowing him. Love to Rita, Stephanie and Alex I know you have heavy hearts-I know I do.
My heart goes out to Dr. Colen's family, both personal and professional. I have been a patient for almost 3 years, and Dr. Colen was there when I had no where else to turn for my SI joint problems. He was so calming, understanding, and had the ability to make you feel like you were his only patient. I completely trusted him and never had a single worry going into any of my surgeries. A popular poem rings so very true "A Golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best."

To Robs Family,
You can see by the praise and love and wonderful memories shared how much the other people in Rob's life have been touched by him and now his death. So tragic, so heart renching.
I had the extreme honor of being one of the many fine nurses who have worked with Rob's patients both on the floor and in the er. You could be a prince or the pauper and Rob alway grabbed you hand for a hardy shake and even a hug, you felt you were the center of his universe at that time. Rare indeed. He had the ability to remember your name , and always always followed up with a 'How are you , anything i can do for
Patient's recieved his rapt attention and skill that knew no bounds, when you knew Rob was on a case you knew the best was being done and given.
He will be terribly missed. The hole left in our midst will not be filled , please tae comfort in all of our prayers and love.
May God's Blessings give you comfort.

Dr. Robert Colen's life epitomized genuine caring, down to earth friendliness, generosity, professionalism and humor all rolled up in this talented surgeon whose co-workers, staff and patients could not have loved or respected him more.
I have worked at Botsford for 16 years and Dr. Colen had replaced my husband's knee and his hip. Coincidentally Dr. Colen and I discovered that we both came from Corona, California; I had worked at Corona Regional Medical Center for 25 years and he was an EMT out of the same hospital. Small world.
This wonderful doctor, co-worker, family man and friend shared his life and talents with so many during a life too brief, but we are all so blessed to have known him.
Condolences to Rita, Alex, Kelley and all of the Colen family.

To the Colen Family,
Dr. Colen was a truly special and skilled physician. He was also an extremely wonderful person. He had a kind word for everyone. GOD broke the mold with him. This is a great loss for us all. He will truly be missed. My prayers are with his family and friends.
I first met Dr. Colen in 1997 when he was resident at Botsford. He has always been a patient and kind man. It was amazing to see his generiousity, skill and the goodness in his heart shine through year after year. He had a smile and gentle words for everyone. I praay deeply for his family and for all of us who grieve the loss of this remarkable human being. He has left the legacy of what we should all aspire to be. Dr. Colen you will be loved forever and never forget. You were truly a gift from GOD.
Rob and Rita are loved so much by my son, Dirk and his Kelly that it spilled over onto all of us. When they speak of Rob and Rita, our hearts are warmed and always will be.
To the family and staff,
Words can't begin to express my feelings, since I had just spent 2 days with Dr. Colen at the Ortho Trauma Conference in Southfield. I was finally able to see him 6 years after he had suggested that I go back to school to find a new career. I finally had the opportunity to tell him THANK YOU, for all he had done for me and my son. Dr. Colen really helped my family through some trying times and through this time of sorrow I really hope you can find some comfort in the fact, that he made a real impact on us. I am so glad that we took that picture and I will cherish it forever!
The Thomas Family will keep you in prayer and hope you will soon find comfort to carry you through this tough time.
My family and I are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Dr. Colen. May the promise Jesus gave in John 5:28, 29 provide comfort during this difficult time. "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life." Take Care

My husband had a bad fall and totally shattered his left wrist. We were referred to Dr. Colen in late May to do the surgery. With the very first meeting, we knew that he was the surgeon for us. When you meet him, he puts your mind at ease. He was kind, compassionate, funny and did an excellent job on his wrist. We are grateful to him and will never forget the care my husband received. Our deepest condolences to his family and those who worked with him -- he will be missed.
To the family. I am so sorry for your loss
He is already missed so much. Such a kind and friendly person and a great physician.
I had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Colen when he was a resident at TCO. He always had a smile on his face & he was genuine. My thoughts & prayers go out to you during this time. God Bless.
"The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness."
Farewell to a teacher of teachers, a man overflowing with faith and lovingness, a kind gentleman who has taught us so much beyond the textbook. May you rest in eternal peace.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Colen at Tri Country Orthopedics. I will remember him as a great surgeon, a doctor loved by his patients and a compassionate man. During that time period my brother suddenly passed away, Dr. Colen was kind and generous. He and his family will be in my prayers.

We would like to express our deepest sympathy for your loss. The loss of someone close is difficult to bear. It is our hope that you know that we care. God promises a time when death will be no more and this is found at Revelation 21:4 which reads: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." I hope this brings you some comfort.

I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Colen on the orthopedic unit at Botsford since his internship. His love of life was a light that shined to brighten everyones day. Although his life was considered short by our definition, he lived an incredible life. "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." The impact he made on each life he touched was such a gift. He was a unique, amazing man. Thank you to the Colen Family for sharing your husband and father for the good of us all. May his memories comfort you at this difficult time.

My heart was deeply saddened by the shocking news today. Dr Colen was always a kind and gentle man. In all my years at Botsford I never heard a physician or nurse say a single bad thing about him. Nurses wanted to care for his patients, and interns wanted to be in the OR with him. The world is better for having him in it, even for such a short time. I feel honored just to have known him.
We are friends of Janet and fernando and we wanted to send our thoughts and prayers to you and your family

I worked with Rob on his first day at MGH in the trauma room, I knew that day he would be like no other Trauma Fellow we had. It was always a good day for the team when we knew Rob would be with us.Before he left his time at MGH we made a book with our pictures and a note from each of us.My prayers are with all.
Working in the medical field my family is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Colen. May the promise by God in Revelation 21:4 provide comfort for your family, "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.Ē Take Care

Dr. Colen; extremely intelligent, generous, kind, understanding, compassionate and very caring of each hospital and office staff member and patient.
John and I nicknamed Dr. Colen, Dr Trick or Treat because he and his wife Mrs. Colen were so generous to fill the waiting room with water, coffee and treats for young and old alike.
We still cannot wrap our minds around this great loss to his family, the medical world and his patients.
We cannot even begin to imagine the magnitude of loss his family is feeling. Please remember the Colen family in your prayers and thoughts in the coming days, weeks and months.
Dr. Colen magnified the care, compassion and his work to help others in every way was outstanding!
God must have had an injured Angel with a badly broken wing and needed Dr Colen to do emergency surgery.
Dr. Colen... Rest in Eternal Peace.
I worked with Rob many years ago in California. He was a top notch paramedic and I have no doubt he was an excellent surgeon. My sincerest sympathies to his wife and children.
I am saddened by this news. Although I had not seen, "Robbie" in over 30 plus years he would of called me by name if he would of seen me. Music was our game back in the 70's and he was right in there. Made me do more to be better at what I do. R.I.P. Robert, you did good.
